Creating a Simulation Tool for Optimized PV and Battery Sizing

About the client

Our client is a municipal energy provider offering 100% renewable electricity from solar, wind, water, and biomass. It operates Austria’s largest community PV installations and supports local energy communities with transparent, sustainable energy solutions.

Energy communities need smart tools to make well-founded investment decisions in PV and storage systems. We developed a flexible and scalable simulation and monitoring tool that processes granular consumption and price data - ensuring measurable efficiency, reduced grid costs, and maximum transparency.

Develop an intelligent tool to determine the optimal sizing of PV systems and battery storage - based on detailed consumption and market price data - with the goal of reducing grid costs and enabling data-driven investment decisions.

Solution

A simulation-based calculator that processes over 35,000 data points per request. Based on user inputs, it provides tailored recommendations for PV and storage sizing - complemented by a user-friendly monitoring portal designed for energy communities.

A practical tool that translates complex energy data into clear, actionable insights. It supports municipalities and energy community operators in making well-informed investment decisions and advancing local energy autonomy.

At the core of this project was a key challenge: how to determine the optimal PV and battery sizing for a local water plant in a way that balances economic viability with energy autonomy. Our mission was to develop a simulation engine capable of doing just that - based on high-resolution energy and market data.

Each simulation run processes over 35,000 data points - including detailed consumption profiles, hourly spot prices, and user-defined parameters such as roof area or desired self-sufficiency. The tool automatically compares multiple configurations and evaluates them based on grid usage, storage capacity, and cost efficiency.

To complement this, we created a user-friendly monitoring portal tailored to energy communities. It offers real-time visibility into energy flows, financial indicators, and performance benchmarks - turning complex energy data into practical decision-making support for municipalities, operators, and citizens alike.
